Why waterproofing before the monsoon matters

Dampness is far cheaper to prevent than to repair. A short checklist to finish before the rains arrive.

Every year the first heavy rains show up the same problems: damp patches on ceilings, peeling paint and seepage in bathrooms. Almost all of them can be prevented with a few weeks of preparation.

Where water gets in

  • Roof slabs and parapet joints
  • Bathrooms, kitchens and balconies
  • Basements and retaining walls
  • Cracks around windows and pipes

Your pre-monsoon checklist

  1. Clean the surface. Remove dust, loose material and old coatings.
  2. Repair cracks. Fill them with a suitable repair mortar first.
  3. Apply the waterproofing system. Crystalline coatings suit concrete; liquid membranes suit roofs and wet areas.
  4. Let it cure. Allow full curing before a flood test.
  5. Test. Hold water on the area for 24 to 48 hours and check below.

Why do it now

Waterproofing needs dry weather to cure. Once the rains start, the job gets harder and costs more, and the damage has already begun.
