How to choose the right tile adhesive

Not every tile needs the same adhesive. Match the adhesive to the tile size, the surface and the location.

A tile that pops off a wall or sounds hollow underfoot is almost always an adhesive problem, not a tile problem. Picking the right product at the start saves expensive rework later.

1. Look at the tile

Large-format and vitrified tiles absorb very little water, so they need a polymer-modified adhesive that bonds to a dense back. Small ceramic wall tiles are happy with a standard cement-based adhesive.

2. Look at the surface

  • Concrete or plaster: clean, dry and free of dust and oil.
  • Existing tiles: roughen the glaze and use a high-bond adhesive.
  • Uneven walls: level first; do not use thick adhesive to hide a bad surface.

3. Look at the location

Bathrooms, balconies and facades face water and temperature swings. Choose a flexible, water-resistant adhesive and grout for these areas.

4. Apply it properly

  1. Spread with a notched trowel and comb the adhesive in one direction.
  2. Press the tile and slide it slightly across the ridges.
  3. Check coverage by lifting one tile now and then.
  4. Respect the open time on the data sheet.
